The Technology, Media And Telecommunications Review

The Technology

Our ambition is fuelled by our commitment to showing the power of technology to fuel progress, deliver results and enhance lives. We explore the applications of emerging technologies and champion their use. From cloud and 5G to artificial intelligence and quantum, we analyse the significance and opportunity of new tech and identify how they fit into the thriving UK tech ecosystem. This conference on 30 June will look at what the tech sector is doing to measure, reduce and report emissions, and importantly, how digital innovation can help us reach net zero. This event is free to attend for techUK members and the public sector. Defence and security The Defence programme works to help the UK’s Defence technology sector align itself with the MOD.

In the 65 years since Joseph Schumpeter’s classic characterization of the ‘creative destruction’ process of industrial technological change, the role of technology in economic growth has grown relentlessly. The author provides the first detailed assessment of underinvestment in R&D and the two major R&D policy response mechanisms – tax policy and direct funding. The policy models and analyses presented are based largely on US economic experience, but the resulting prescriptions are relevant for all existing and emerging technology-based economies. The author’s ultimate message is that the industry-centric Schumpeterian model must be expanded to one in which competition among governments is as important as it is within the private sector. Narrative style faces the challenge of the selective criteria applied to create the account. Frey regularly refers to a stream of academic papers, (nearly always authored by two economists!), and then makes assertions and ponders interpretations without rigorous empirical test.
